So I'm curious: if a fic concept was a cliche at the height of a fandom, is it still a cliche if that fandom's been dead for... (checks) eight years? *looks at her word doc guiltily*

I think my NaNo thing may be a lost cause. I still wanna write it, but I think it won't get done madly in this months. Ironically, though I think I might make up close to the wordcount across all the different things I'm doing.

So how about that WiP Meme, eh? The one where you post bits from some works in progress? In the name of sanity, I shall restrain it to five.

So I'm curious, how to people pick titles for their stories?

I ask out of curiosity mostly because I'm seriously struggling to think of a title for the fic I'm writing, and can't really do anything about posting it until I've thought of a title (none of that 'Untitled' nonsense, thank you very much). I've exhausted my usual avenues: the massive dictionaries and quotation books I own which I flip through looking for something appropriate. I'm now at the headdesk stage.

Grr.

If I'd known about this, I would have added a section on descriptions in my rant thing ages ago.

So, there was this contest in the SFX Magazine for short stories. I entered. I didn't win, but apparently I made it into the top 50. Put it this way, I am thrilled beyond belief. When there are hundreds and hundreds of entrants, knowing you had a good enough story to get into the top 50 is a huge boost to your ego.

So I figured I'd post the story here for posterity.
