In the wake (or should that be 'aftermath'?) of the Lord of the Rings films the number of Legolas fanfics notoriously exploded, mostly because of Orlando Bloom, even if his job was mostly to hang around and look pretty. The majority of these fics were, to say the least, excrutiating. Mostly they consisted of the Mary Sue du jour finding some way to cop off with Orlando Legolas, or he was shoehorned into a slash pairing with one or more of the Fellowship.
Enter this fic, which I stumbled across quite by accident, but which a lot of people of my acquaintance wound up reading. It's one of those fics that everyone has read because it's one of the only examples of that ever-so-rare beast, a long excellent gen fic. And, you know, I hate to be a dirty heretic (that's a lie - being the heretic is fun), but sometimes gen fic is quite nice.
This is pretty much a coming of age story, even though that coming of age takes place across decades, which is rather appropriate given the longevity of the Elves. Jocelyn managed to do what so few fic writers have managed to do, which is make me cry, by creating thoroughly rounded well written characters, and making me invest emotionally in them. When the story takes its twists and turns, it's as gut wrenching for the reader as it is for the characters. And for that reason alone, you should read it.
You'll note that with a lot of these recs, I'm giving virtually no plot information. That's deliberate. I'm trying to point out which fics I like, and why, and let you guys make up your own minds whether you agree with me when you read it. So, enjoy.
